Why Did I Choose This? A Simple Talk About Pain and Purpose

If life has been hard, this is for you. Written in plain words, from my heart to yours.

Let's Sit Together First

Before Anything Else

If you opened this blog, something inside you is asking a big question. Maybe you went through something painful. A bad relationship. A childhood that hurt. Years of money problems. Maybe people treated you badly — emotionally, mentally, even physically. Or maybe you keep falling for the same kind of person, again and again, and you feel used. Tired. Done.

And somewhere along the way, you heard this idea: "You chose this. Your soul chose this, before you were even born."

I want to talk about this with you very gently. Because if someone really hurt you, hearing "you chose it" can feel wrong. It can feel like blame. That is not what I mean, and that is not what this blog is about.

So let me say this clearly, right at the start: what others did to you was their fault. Not yours. What was wrong was wrong. You did not deserve to be hurt. Nothing I write below changes that.

But there is still a deeper question worth asking. Not "why did they do this to me." That answer is simple — they made a wrong choice. The deeper question is: what was I supposed to learn from going through this? What strength did I build? What is the lesson hiding inside the pain?

That question changes everything. Because once you start asking it, you stop waiting for the other person to change, to apologise, to wake up one day and feel sorry. You stop giving them the power to decide when you get to heal. You become the one writing your own story again.

That is what we are going to talk about.

An Old Belief

The Idea That Your Soul Chose This Life

Many old traditions believe something simple: your soul is not new. It has lived before. And before you were born this time, your soul chose this life — this family, these people, these struggles — on purpose.

You will find this idea in Indian thought, in the idea of karma. You will find it in Buddhist teaching. You will find it in many cultures around the world, in different words. The idea is always the same: nothing about your life is random. Your soul picked this path because it had something important to learn here.

Now here is the important part. Choosing to learn something hard is not the same as deserving pain. These are two very different things. A soul does not choose suffering because it wants to suffer. It chooses a hard path because that path will build something inside it — strength, wisdom, courage — that an easy path never could.

Your soul did not choose pain because it loves pain. It chose this path because it wanted to grow into someone it could not become any other way.

Think of it like training for something hard. A runner does not enjoy the pain of training. But they choose it, again and again, because of what it builds in them. Your soul, in its own way, did something similar. It looked at many possible lives and said, "This one. This family, this struggle. This is where I will grow the most."

So you are not here by accident. You are here because something in you, deeper than your mind, chose this path on purpose.

A Pattern You Know Well

Why Do You Keep Attracting the Same Kind of People?

This one hurts the most. You leave one bad relationship, and somehow the next one feels the same. You walk away from someone who controlled you, and then you meet someone else who does the same thing. You promise yourself, "never again" — and somehow, you find yourself there again.

Why does this keep happening?

What Is Happening Inside You

When you grow up in a home where love came with conditions — where you only got attention when you behaved a certain way, or did things right — your mind learns something quietly. It learns that love feels like work. Love feels like proving yourself.

So as an adult, when someone warm and steady and kind comes into your life, it can almost feel boring. Strange. Not exciting. But when someone distant, unpredictable, or hard to please comes along, you feel a pull. A spark. That spark is not love. It is just something familiar. Your heart learned, long ago, that this is what love feels like.

We do not always attract what is good for us. We attract what feels familiar — until we heal the old hurt that made it feel familiar.

What Your Soul Is Trying to Finish

There is also a deeper layer here. Your soul keeps circling back to the same kind of lesson because it has not been fully learned yet. Think of it like climbing a spiral staircase. You pass through the same area again and again, but each time, you are a little higher than before.

So this pattern is not a punishment. It is your soul saying, "We are close. We are almost there. One more round, and we finally break through."

The people who hurt you the most are not your enemies in this story. As strange as it sounds, they are showing you exactly where you still need healing.

What Different Kinds of Pain Teach

If This Was Your Experience

Let's get specific now. I don't want to just give you nice ideas. I want to walk through the real things you may have lived through, and look honestly at what they may have been teaching you.

If You Grew Up Poor or Struggled With Money

This kind of struggle is painful, but it often builds something very strong inside you — the ability to survive, to find a way when there seems to be no way, to value people over things. Many people who grew up without much money later became some of the most caring, most resourceful, most grounded people you will ever meet.

This does not mean poverty is okay. It is not. But ask yourself — what did you learn about yourself, about what really matters, because of what you went through? That strength is yours now. No one can take it away.

If You Went Through Emotional or Mental Abuse

This kind of pain is hard because no one can see it. There are no marks on your body. But it changes how you see yourself. It can make you doubt your own feelings, your own mind.

Often, people who go through this are deeply caring, deeply sensitive people. That same softness made it harder for someone unkind to handle, and so they tried to dim your light. But that softness is still yours. The lesson here is learning to trust your own feelings again — to know that what you feel is real, and what you need matters.

If You Went Through Physical Abuse

I want to hold this one gently. This kind of pain lives in the body, not just the mind. Healing it takes time, and it often needs real support — a counsellor, a doctor, someone trained to help the body heal, not just the mind.

If your soul chose this path, it was not because you are weak. It takes real courage to live through this and to keep going. The lesson here is often about learning that your body is yours, that you deserve safety, and that you have every right to say no.

If You Keep Falling for People Who Cannot Love You Back

This pattern is usually trying to teach you one big thing: stop looking outside for the love you can give yourself. If you keep chasing people who cannot show up for you, somewhere inside, you may believe you are not enough as you are — that you have to earn love, chase it, or shrink yourself to be loved.

The real shift happens when you realise: the love you kept hoping someone else would give you — you can give that to yourself first. When you start treating yourself with kindness and patience, the whole pattern begins to change. What you accept from others changes too.

The Real Question

What Was My Soul Trying to Learn?

This is the question that changes everything. Not "why did this happen to me." But "what was I learning through this?"

This does not mean pretending what happened was okay. It does not mean rushing past your pain. It means slowly, gently, shifting from feeling like something that just happened to you — into someone who is growing because of what happened.

When you ask "why did this happen to me," the power stays with the other person. When you ask "what did I learn," you take the power back.

Right now, maybe you are waiting. Waiting for someone to say sorry. Waiting for someone to admit what they did. Waiting for someone to finally see how much they hurt you. And maybe that day will come. I hope it does.

But your healing cannot wait for them. If it does, they still hold the power over your life. When you stop waiting and start asking what you learned instead, you take that power back into your own hands.

Common Lessons People Learn From Hard Times

Every story is different, but some lessons come up again and again. See if any of these feel true for you.

  • 1

Learning to value yourself from the inside. If people often rejected you or made you feel "not enough," your lesson may be learning that your worth does not depend on what anyone else thinks of you.

  • 2

Learning to say no. If people often crossed your limits or controlled you, your lesson may be learning how to set boundaries — to love people without losing yourself.

  • 3

Learning to trust yourself again. If people made you doubt your own mind, your lesson may be learning to trust what you feel and what you know, deep down.

  • 4

Learning to let go, for your own peace. If someone you loved betrayed you, your lesson may be learning that forgiving them is not for their sake. It is so you can finally put the weight down.

  • 5

Learning to speak up. If you were told you were "too much" or made to feel small, your lesson may be learning to use your voice — and to know that what you say matters.

Two Things Working Together

Why You Need Both Healing for the Mind and Healing for the Soul

Here is something I believe deeply: spiritual understanding alone is not enough to heal real pain. And ordinary advice alone often misses the deeper "why." You need both.

Healing your mind means understanding why you react the way you do, why certain things trigger you, why certain patterns repeat. This is the work of therapy, of self-awareness, of slowly changing old habits.

Healing your soul means understanding the bigger picture — why this happened, what it was teaching you, what your life is really about. This gives your pain meaning. It turns "why me" into "what now."

Healing the mind fixes the wound. Healing the soul shows you what the wound was trying to teach. You need both.

Pain Can Make You Stronger

There is real research on this. People who go through hard things, and then work through them properly with the right support, often come out stronger than before. Not just "okay" — genuinely stronger. More caring. More grounded. More aware of what matters in life.

This is not just a spiritual idea. It has been studied and proven, again and again. Your pain, when you face it properly, can become the very thing that makes you who you are meant to be.

How to Actually Get There

Six Simple Steps to Move Forward

Now let's talk about the breakthrough. Not just understanding it — actually moving toward it.

Many of us live waiting. Waiting for the person who hurt us to change. Waiting for life to feel fair before we let ourselves be happy. Waiting for permission to heal.

The breakthrough comes when you realise — no one is coming to save you from your story. But you can save yourself. And it does not start with something big. It starts with one small shift in the question you ask yourself every day.

1. See the Pattern Clearly

Before you can change anything, you have to see it clearly, without judging yourself. Ask yourself honestly: what keeps repeating in my life? What kind of people do I keep meeting? Write it down. Say it out loud. You are not broken for having this pattern. It came from somewhere real. Seeing it clearly is the first step to changing it.

2. Ask What It Taught You

Once you can see the pattern, ask yourself gently — not with blame, but with curiosity: "What was this trying to teach me?" Sit with that question. Write about it. Let the answer come slowly, in its own time. This question alone shifts your whole energy.

3. Get Real Help, Not Just Ideas

If you went through real trauma, please talk to someone trained to help — a counsellor or therapist. Understanding the spiritual side is helpful, but it is not a replacement for real support. Trauma lives in the body, and it needs proper care to heal. Alongside this, simple things like prayer, meditation, journaling, or quiet time can support you too.

4. Let Yourself Grieve

Before you can fully move forward, let yourself feel sad about what you went through but did not deserve. You deserved a safe childhood. You deserved kind relationships. You deserved to feel valued. That sadness is real, and it needs space. Do not rush past it. Sit with the younger version of yourself, and be as kind to them as you would be to a child you love.

5. Choose Who You Want to Be Now

Once you have grieved, you get to choose. Not based on what happened to you — but based on who you want to become. Who do you want to be? What kind of life do you want to build? This time, you are choosing it, not because pain forced you, but because you want to.

6. Let Your Healing Help Others Too

When you do this work, something beautiful happens. Your healing does not just change your own life — it touches everyone around you. People who watch you heal find hope for themselves too. Your story, once it is healed, becomes a light for someone else still walking in the dark.

If You Are Still Hurting Right Now

A Gentle Word for You

If you are still in the middle of the pain, not yet on the other side, I want to speak to you directly.

You do not need to have learned the lesson yet to be worthy of love right now. You do not need to have it all figured out. You are allowed to simply be where you are.

You are allowed to still be hurting. You are allowed to not have the answers yet. You are still completely worthy of love and care, exactly as you are right now.

If you are in a situation that is not safe — physically, emotionally, or any other way — please reach out to someone you trust, or to a counsellor or support service. Asking for help is not weakness. It is one of the bravest things you can do.

This idea, that your soul chose to learn something through pain, is meant to give you hope. It is never meant to be a reason to stay somewhere unsafe, or to think the abuse was acceptable. Your safety always comes first. The deeper meaning can come later.

What Changes When You Heal

Signs That You Are Healing

As you work through this, you may start to notice real changes — not just in how you think, but in how you feel and what you attract into your life.

  • You can think about the painful memory without it taking over your whole day. It is part of your story now, not the whole story.

  • You start to feel real compassion — for yourself, and slowly, even for the people who hurt you, knowing they were also limited, hurting people doing the best they knew.

  • Old triggers stop pulling you under. You notice yourself pausing instead of reacting straight away.

  • You start meeting different kinds of people. Slowly, gently, your life begins to match the healing you have done inside.

  • You start to feel that your pain has a purpose — that what you went through can now help someone else.

One More Important Thing

What They Did Was Their Choice. What You Learned Is Yours.

I want to repeat something from the very beginning, because it matters so much. Everything in this blog is about your own learning, your own growth. It is never about excusing what someone else did to you.

The person who hurt you made their own choice. A wrong one. This idea of soul learning does not erase that. They are responsible for their own actions, and there are consequences for that, in their own time, in their own way.

What someone did to you is theirs to carry. What you do with what happened to you — that is yours. That is where your power lives.

You do not need to make their behaviour sound okay to find meaning in your own healing. You can say, "What they did was wrong," and also say, "I am choosing to grow from what I went through." Both things are true at once.

Your healing does not need their apology. Your peace does not need their permission. That is what it means to truly own your story.

Small Daily Habits

Simple Things You Can Do Every Day

Understanding all this is the first step. What actually changes your life is doing small things, every day, that keep you moving forward.

Morning Check-In

Before you pick up your phone, sit quietly for five minutes. Put your hand on your heart. Ask yourself, "What do I need today?" Then just listen.

Write It Down

Keep a small notebook. Once a week, write about something hard you went through. Ask yourself what it taught you. Over time, this notebook becomes proof of how far you have come.

Talk to Your Younger Self

Close your eyes. Picture yourself as a child, or as the younger version of you who went through the hardest time. Say to them: "I see you. It was not your fault. You are enough." Let those words sink into you too.

Choose Your Energy Each Day

Each morning, set a simple intention. Decide what kind of energy you want to carry that day. This small habit helps you respond to life with choice, instead of just reacting.

End the Day With Two Questions

Before you sleep, ask yourself: "What did I get through today that deserves credit?" and "What did I learn about myself today?" Small wins matter. Track them.

Do Not Heal Alone

Find people who understand — a support group, a close friend, a community, a therapist. Healing in isolation is much harder. You were never meant to carry this by yourself.

You Did Not Come Here to Stay Broken

You came here to grow, to learn, to become someone stronger through everything you have lived. Your soul chose a hard path because it believed you could grow through it.

What happened to you was real. The people who hurt you made real choices, and that does not become okay just because you learn from it. But alongside that truth, another one is also true: you are not just someone this happened to. You are someone who can grow because of it. The pen is in your hand.

You do not have to wait for anyone to change before you begin. You do not have to wait for an apology before you heal. You do not have to wait for the world to be fair before you let yourself be whole.

You are the breakthrough you have been waiting for.
